9月28日から30日まで、高知の永国寺キャンパスで開催された日本微生物生態学会第39回高知大会に参加し、古川が招待講演を行いました。先日の地球化学会年会に続き、今回も初めて参加する学会の年会でした。普段はあまり接する機会のない興味深い研究に触れ、良いリフレッシュにもなりました。さまざまな環境に多様な微生物が生息している一方で、その多くについては、まだわかっていないことが数多く残されていると改めて実感しました。詳細な系統解析を取り入れた発表も多く、まだまだ学ぶべきことが多いと感じました。なかなか訪れる機会のない高知ですが、空いた時間には高知城を訪れたり、カツオの藁焼きを味わったりと、色々と楽しんできました。
Furukawa attended the 39th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Microbial Ecology, held at Eikokuji Campus in Kochi from September 28 to 30, where he gave an invited talk. Following my recent participation in the Annual Meeting of the Geochemical Society of Japan, this was another society whose annual meeting I was attending for the first time. It was a refreshing and stimulating opportunity to explore fascinating research beyond his usual field. The presentations offered a renewed appreciation of the diversity of microorganisms living in a wide range of environments, and of how much remains unknown about many of them. Detailed phylogenetic analyses also featured in many presentations, highlighting how much there is still to learn. The trip also offered a chance to enjoy Kochi, a place I rarely has the opportunity to visit. Between sessions, I explored Kochi Castle and sampled the local specialty, straw-seared bonito.
